I had the privilege of contributing as a motion designer to an extraordinary project—an impactful video advertising a thought-provoking book centered on marginalization and stigmatization. This powerful narrative delves into societal issues, exploring how individuals face marginalization based on factors such as skin color, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion, social background, and the additional layer of stigma associated with certain illnesses.

Creative Collaboration with This is Cow:

Collaborating closely with Charles Miller, a talented creative director at This is Cow—a company known for its innovative and socially relevant projects—I took on the role of designing and animating kinetic typography for this unique book. This collaborative effort aimed to translate the book’s essence into a compelling video format that resonated with its core themes.

Innovative Design Approach:

The book’s distinctiveness lies in its intentional design, with words printed in the margins to create a challenging reading experience. Translating this concept into the video, my role involved mimicking the book’s design. I strategically placed text in the margins of the video, embracing the challenge to replicate the reading experience visually. The kinetic typography brought these marginal words to life, adding a dynamic layer to the storytelling.

I wanted the type to be seamlessly integrated into the video environment. This was achieved through the application of After Effects’ AI Rotoscoping tool.

Narrative Amplification with Prof David Olusoga:

To enhance the video’s impact, we collaborated with Prof David Olusoga, who provided insightful commentary on some of the stories within the book. The goal was to create a seamless fusion between the visual elements and Prof Olusoga’s narration, enriching the storytelling experience and reinforcing the book’s powerful messages.

The end product resonated strongly with the client, reflecting the collaborative efforts and creativity poured into the project.
